With supermarkets alone producing over 800,000 tons of plastic packaging waste a year, the great Pacific garbage patch is unlikely to get any smaller! We contribute to it every year, two-thirds of the plastic waste is created by us dropping litter either directly on beaches or even in our towns and cities. Plastic finds its way into our water systems and causeways and rivers and then out to sea. In addition, poorly managed landfill sites and industry spills contribute to the ever-increasing plastic whirlpool.

The reality is that when you see the images of the plastic, it only accounts for 1% of the plastic in our waterways. As plastic slowly fragments and breaks up, it creates microscopic particles of plastic that never truly go away.  PCB’s, polychlorinated biphenyls, have been used in many manufactured goods since the late 1920s. With all the waste entering our waterways and increasing the number of PCB’s found, it is inevitable they will find our way into our food chain. This causes significant risks… You can read more about PCB’s here http://www.greenfacts.org/en/pcbs/

The only real answer for us it to shrink our usage of plastic and eventually find other sustainable packaging and takeaway options that negate the need to produce plastic products.

We take sustainability very seriously here at Brook Street and want to do everything we can to be part of the solution. We have recently introduced recyclable, biodegradable and compostable products to our enviro range and since the launch, we have seen a huge increase in sales across the industry. It’s clear that we all need to do our part.
